Please join the Melrose Library Association's Adult Enrichment Program to hear Anne Ake and Larry Ogren tell us about the challenges and adventures surrounding the launch of the worldâ??s first sea turtle conservation program in Costa Rica. Author Anne Ake will discuss her book,
Turning Turtles in Tortuguero: Stories from the Origins of Sea Turtle Research, and will be accompanied by Larry Ogren, who was the inspiration for her work. For more than 20 years, Mr. Ogren helped list and manage the 5 species of sea turtles under the Endangered Species Act. He led research efforts detailing the threats to turtles from the fishing and shrimp industries. Today the turtle research station is part of an international organization devoted to the study and conservation of the sea turtle. After retiring, he volunteered for many years for organizations performing water quality sampling, turtle beach monitoring, shoreline habitat advocacy, and led other projects to enhance science and discovery. This is more than a conservation story; it is also a human message about the realities of existence for a people, a cause, and the strong--but fragile--green sea turtles. The program is free to attend, older children are welcome, and goodies will be served after the presentation. This program is a collaboration of the Putnam County Library System and the Melrose Library Association

Billy's Story: It all began in January of 2014, when Billy just couldn't shake what he thought were symptoms of the flu. On May 27,2014 (after multiple CT Scans, X-rays, bone marrow biopsies and countless blood tests ) Billy was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome; a form of blood cancer. Billy spent 10 Days in Flagler Hospital prior to being transferred to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville where he received the life changing diagnosis.

Reason for the benefit: At this time Billy's treatments have consisted of several rounds of chemo therapy and will be followed by a bone marrow transplant from a matching donor once one is found. After his brothers were found not to be matches for his much needed bone marrow transplant, Billy has had to be placed on the National Registry. The cost of being placed on the registry is in excess of $10,000 which the insurance company will not pay. When you add that to the already, mounting expenses of co-pays, medications, travel expenses and feeding your family, all with no current income, you find the reason for the benefit. Billy's friends have formed a committee to organize various events to raise money to help him and his family with these needs.

How can you help: First, PRAY for Billy's complete healing. Next, spread the word of the events,
invite everyone you know, and attend them yourself. Last, GIVE. There is no amount too small
when it is given from the heart. Thank you in advance for your prayers & support.

The Melrose Public Library is proud to display, in the atrium, paintings of local artist, Harimandir Khalsa. She started painting when she was 5 years old. Her parents gave her art supplies and she was alone much of the time, giving her ample opportunities to paint whatever she wanted. There are larger pieces in the atrium called mandalas, painted on canvas. Their motivating concept is about the inner journey and discovery. Harimandir started mandalas about 5 years ago with research into da Vinci's Vitruvian Man. This search led her to another Renaissance thinker, Fibonacci, and his olden number sequence and spirals. She incorporates Fibonacci's patterns into her mandalas by drawing a series of concentric circles, bisecting them, connecting the lines, and coloring in various patterns and colors. She usually plans ahead for mandalas, but will often improvise to modify and improve the original concept. Then, there are smaller pieces. These decorative paintings on wood frames contain small mirrors. Harimandir has painted many pieces of various sizes, ranging from her smallest pieces of 9x9 inches, to her murals of 10x50 feet. You can visit some of her murals: the Here Today mural in Gainesville at 625 NW 8th Ave, The Last 600 Million Years of Evolution mural at Building X of the Santa Fe State College campus in Gainesville, and the Putnam Hotel mural in Palatka at 2nd St & Hwy 17.
Visit the Melrose Library and enjoy Harimandir's works for yourself; they will be on display from August until October 10. For more information about Ms. Khalsa and her works, visit her website at www.harimandir.com. For additional questions concerning current or custom works, email her at harimandir@aol.com.
