Idols

In Exodus 20:3, God says, “You shall have no other Gods before me.”

You might be saying, “Well of course I don’t have any other Gods that I worship; it’s not like I’m worshiping some golden calf.”

Let’s break down what an idol is: it’s anything that we put before God. Where our identity lies and what makes us feel valued.

Whatever is filling the place of God in your life. So, what could be an idol in your life?

Is it money? Power? Respect? Notoriety? Your job?

Family? Your significant other? Your kids? The want of a relationship or marriage or kids?

Maybe it’s finding comfort in other things, like entertainment, food or friends and not going to God with your problems.

Maybe it’s your constant need to stay busy, to have a full calendar.

Maybe it's finding your identity in your education, status, or the country you live in.

Maybe it’s politics.

Maybe it's your cell phone, constantly doom scrolling on Facebook or Instagram.

There are a lot of idols in our day to day lives. But it is our choice to give them power or not.

Some of these things I mentioned are good! But when we place them over God in our lives, they become bad.

So, what idols do you need to take a step back from, to put God in His rightful place?
