Sometimes faith isn't about holding on tighter. Sometimes faith is about finally realizing we don't have to.
Jon Reddick's “Holding On (Praise God)” is an anthem for anybody who's ever been tired—really tired—from carrying burdens, worries, disappointments, and circumstances that feel just a little too heavy.
Written by Reddick alongside Matthew West and Jeff Pardo, the song brings us back to a powerful truth: God never asked us to carry what only He can carry.
The heart of the song is beautifully simple: I'm holding on to God because I know my God is holding on to me. And that's where I have to make this personal for just a minute.
I've spent enough years trying to hold everything together to know that I'm not nearly as good at it as I thought I was! Sometimes we confuse faith with being strong enough to handle everything ourselves. But there have been moments in my own life when all I could do was let go—and discover that God hadn't let go of me.
To me that's the beauty of this song. Our hope isn't found in how strong our grip is. Our hope is found in how strong God's grip is.
That's the same truth we find in Psalm 121: “I lift up my eyes to the mountains—where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord.”
So if you're holding on by a thread today, maybe that's exactly where you need to be—not holding everything together yourself, but placing it into the hands of the One who has been holding onto you all along.
