New Music Friday: Matt Maher "Gonna Be Alright"

You know, every once in a while a song comes along that feels like it showed up right on time. Not because life is perfect… but because life isn’t perfect.

Today’s New Music Friday brings us a brand-new song from Matt Maher called “Gonna Be Alright.” Now, if you’ve been around Christian music for any length of time, you know Matt Maher. He’s given us songs like “Lord, I Need You,” “Because He Lives (Amen),” and “Alive & Breathing.” His music has a way of taking deep truths and putting them into words we can carry with us on Monday morning.

But this new song has a different feel. It’s upbeat, it’s full of energy, almost like a friend grabbing you by the shoulders and saying, “Hey… remember who’s holding you.”   I love the timing of it because let’s be honest… sometimes we need that reminder.  Because life has a funny way of making us feel like we’re carrying the whole world on our shoulders.

Maybe it’s a doctor’s appointment you’re waiting on.

Maybe it’s a relationship that needs healing.

Maybe it’s looking at the news and wondering, “Lord, what in the world is happening?”

Maybe it’s waking up often and realizing you don’t have the strength you thought you had.

And that’s where this song hits home for me.  I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to fix things. I’m a Navy guy… we like checklists, plans, solutions, and knowing what’s coming next.  But the older I get, the more I realize there are some things I simply cannot control. I can’t control tomorrow; I can’t control what people say about me; I can’t control every circumstance that comes my way.  But I can trust the One who does.  And that’s the message behind “Gonna Be Alright.”

Not because everything always works out the way I want.

Not because I never have doubts.

Not because I don’t struggle.

But because God is faithful

I’ve battled fears of failure. I’ve wondered if I’m still making a difference. I’ve walked through seasons where I’ve questioned my own abilities and wondered if I still have something valuable to offer.  And then God gently reminds me…  “Ricky, you’re not holding everything together. I am.”  That’s the hope.  The Apostle Paul wrote in Romans 8:28 that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him.  Notice it doesn’t say all things are good.  It says God can take even the hard things and bring good from them.

So today, whatever you’re facing, whatever mountain is in front of you, whatever fear is whispering in your ear…  Lift your head.  Take a breath.  Remember who your God is.

Because the same God who carried you yesterday is already waiting for you tomorrow, because Jesus is still on the throne… it’s gonna be alright.
