When The Picture Doesn’t Match Reality

Writer: Robin RobinsonRobin Robinson

I baked a loaf of bread and it came out terrible! Well, it tasted good.  But it didn't look anything like it was supposed to. It should have been a shiny smooth golden brown top, and light and fluffy inside. Instead? It was barely brown, bumpity, and cracked on top and the inside was really dense.  I was so bummed out thinking I must have done something wrong, otherwise it would have been as beautiful as the picture in the cookbook.

There were other factors at work, though. I think the yeast wasn't as fresh as it should have been.  And I wonder if I used the right kind of flour?  I know I let it sit and rise way too long because I wanted it to be coming out of the oven at the same time supper was done.

Our life is like that.  There are outside influences that affect us, and our seemingly insignificant choices that alter outcomes. Yet we get overwhelmed and discouraged because the reality of our life doesn't look at all like what we pictured it should be by this point.

Each day is a gift from the Lord, but there are times we don't see it that way. We only see what we're missing, constantly looking back and wondering how we got here.  Which means we're missing out on the present! Things may not be the way you planned them but that doesn't make it bad, just different.

"For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." Jeremiah 29:11
