The Source of Love

It's amazing that while the world may be focusing on love, we know the source of love Himself. We asked our staff to share their thoughts on God's love as we look to celebrate it and share it with others this week.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails."

I love this because it reminds me that love isn’t just a feeling but a daily choice, which has helped me make the right decision in difficult moments in my life. God’s love is the perfect example, showing us just how to love even when it seems too hard to.

1 Corinthians 16:14 "Do everything in love."

I know it’s a simple verse, but to me, love is everything. Our actions reflect our love toward God and others. It’s important because love transforms ordinary acts into acts of devotion. When we approach life with love as our foundation, we align ourselves with God's purpose, showing His love through our actions

Sometimes, we take God’s love for granted and the perfect example that He has provided us gets lost in our sin.  God has made us to love.  He made us to love Him and to love each other.  All His commandments are summed up in these two things:  Love God with all your heart and love your neighbor as yourself.  The effect of sin is that we love the wrong things.  God's love is unconditional, eternal, and full of grace.  It’s a love that is steadfast and unchanging, even when we are distant from Him in our sin.

One of my favorite Bible verses about God’s love is Romans 8:38-39: “For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

This verse is a powerful reminder that God’s love is unwavering and unstoppable. No matter what we face; fear, doubt, hardship His love remains constant and unshakable. It’s a comforting truth that brings hope, especially on a day like Valentine’s Day, when we reflect on love. God’s love is the greatest love we will ever know.

One of my favorite Bible verses for Valentines is from 1 Peter 4:8. "Above all, keep loving one another earnestly, since Love covers a multitude of sins.” We are all sinners and make mistakes intentionally or unintentionally. The keyword to this verse is the adverb earnestly. It means with sincere and intense conviction; seriously. If we are sincere and intense in our love for each other, then it will indeed cover a multitude of sins and result everlasting love. The companion verse to this is 1 John 4:8 "Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”

John 15:13  "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one’s life for one’s friends." (or 15:1-17 in context.)

God's love for us is sacrificial. As followers of Christ, we model this sacrificial love in our homes, places of work, and in the marketplace. Sacrifice hurts. As the lyric from the song "Blessed Be Your Name" says, "Though there is pain in the offering, Blessed be the Lord." If we are loving through the pain of sacrifice, we're on a good path.

We love him, because he first loved us.  1 John 4:19

God is using his agape love, continuously. If He loved us first, we can show that same exuberance in loving others because we are the church. No matter if we are on the mountaintop or in the valley, God still loves us.  We should focus on our true Lord and Savior rather than the situation.  Never forget that God loves you no matter what!! I love you and so does Jesus.

Over 20 years ago my daughter was drowning in an undertow. Her father went out there - kept pushing her towards the shore, telling her to keep paddling and calling on Jesus. My daughter survived, but he didn't. His love was an action and a sacrifice so that she might live. What a demonstration of true love. God sent his son Jesus to die for humanity so that we might live. John 15:13 says, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friend." John 3:16 reminds us that God so loved the world that he gave His Son. What a mighty God we serve.

The love of God is an amazing thing that's just too good to keep to ourselves. How amazing is it that God loves us and has a plan for us?! He tells us over and over throughout the Bible how special we are.

And that should change our attitude towards others. When you look at someone do you see them as a bother, as a ______(insert unkind word here) or as less-than? Ephesians 2:10 says we are God’s handiwork, His masterpiece. It's a reminder that we shouldn't be so full of ourselves to think it’s only us!  We should see others how He does.

Let's share His love through our words and actions, on Valentine's Day, and every day.
