When Greg Ewing faced a life-threatening heart attack, his journey to recovery was filled with uncertainty and hardship. Yet, through the darkest moments, one constant source of comfort and strength stood out for him: Hope FM. Greg’s story is a powerful reminder of how a simple radio station can become a beacon of hope, faith, and encouragement during the toughest times.
When Greg told me a little of his story and how much our station meant to him throughout the ordeal, I couldn't wait to have him some share it on the air.
Greg’s Life-Changing Health Crisis
Greg’s ordeal began with a sudden heart attack (called a widowmaker) that nearly took his life. On the way to the hospital, he actually died a couple of times, a terrifying experience for both him and his family. After multiple hospital stays, including one that lasted 10 weeks, Greg faced a long and difficult road to recovery.
During his time at home, he was connected to various medical devices designed to keep him alive. Despite the physical challenges, Greg’s spirit remained strong. Then came the life-saving call: he would receive a heart and kidney transplant. This month marks Greg’s third “birthday” since those surgeries, a milestone he celebrates with gratitude and renewed hope.
How Hope FM Became a Lifeline
Greg had already been a listener of Hope FM before his health crisis, but the station took on a new meaning during his hospital stays and recovery. Being treated at an out-of-town hospital, he was able to stream Hope FM through the app, which gave him a vital connection to home and faith.
The music and messages on Hope FM became more than just background noise. They were a source of encouragement, reminding Greg of God’s presence every step of the way. The songs helped him maintain a positive attitude and gave him strength when he needed it most; and helped his wife worship in the car as she went to and from the hospital.
Sharing Hope with Caregivers and Visitors
Greg’s hospital room saw many visitors—doctors, nurses, and family members—all coming in and out to provide care. Hope FM’s uplifting content gave Greg a way to share hope and faith with those around him. He often talked about how the station helped him communicate his trust in God and inspired others who were part of his journey. It was an open door to sharing the Gospel!
This connection was especially important during moments when things looked bleak. At one point, Greg was in a coma for three days, and his family was called to say their final goodbyes. Miraculously, Greg woke up (wanting to know where his breakfast was!) a moment that left his doctors speechless and his family overwhelmed with joy.
Thankful for a Miracle
Greg credits God for the healing in his life, but he also emphasizes the role Hope FM played in his journey. The station was a constant reminder of faith and hope, helping him stay focused on recovery and trust in God’s plan. And he was sure to let us know how much the availability of our app meant to him as he was outside of our station's signal.
Listening to Hope FM gave Greg a sense of community and spiritual support, even when he was physically isolated. The station’s messages and music helped him face each day with courage and optimism.
